three favorite things

It's easy to get wrapped up in the day to day nonsense; how cluttered the house gets, what laundry needs to be done, what food I need to prepare for my daughter for the week, etc. But aside from that, the weekends are just so beautiful!

This Sunday, I want to highlight my three favorite things of the weekend and a few new favorites.

Last night when we were taking our gal for a stroll right before she went to bed, we were able to see the sunset and how it turns the mountains purple. When we first moved to Las Vegas, our realtor told us that when the sun sets behind the mountains and it gets at just the right spot, you can see the silhouettes of dead presidents. She was totally right.

Sunday means spending the whole day preparing for the week. It means doing chores together, fresh sheets and towels for the bedrooms and bathrooms, clean clothes for the week, dusted and polished floors and my most favorite, cooking and meal prep.

Lately I've been loving this Fan Fare cookbook by Kate McMillan, so many simple and delicious recipes for Sunday.

Another favorite go-to is this vegan chili recipe by Cookie and Kate. This one is particularly awesome because it is versatile enough that you can add a meat if you'd like. I suggest a cinnamon pulled pork butt, with crispy edges, mmmm.

Lastly, you need this candle if you want your house to smell like autumn. Despite the one review saying how it isn't strongly scented enough, I assure you it is! My whole house smells like a cool crisp morning.

Focus On What Makes You Happy

Despite the fact that it is my favorite month out of the entire year, October has been a pretty terrible month. The Las Vegas shooting and the California wildfires have had everything to do with that. My in-laws unfortunately lost their home and everything inside, as did their neighbors.

As a society, we spend a lot of time looking at how sad the world is, without taking into account that to every yin there's a yang, to every down there's an up, etc., etc. This post is to focus on the good that has come of October. So without further adieu, I present to you, a list of things that have made me happy this month.

If you're like me, you love everything about the fall season. The changing leaves, the breezy air, the indulgence in sugar and alcohol until you basically give yourself diabetes and develop alcoholism. It makes me happy to walk into Target and see the first signs of Halloween, the employees unpacking boxes of fake pumpkins and Halloween costumes, and to see the orange bags of candy piled up on the shelves.

My baby turned 8-months yesterday (unbelievable). It makes me happy to see how much she is learning every single day. She has two teeth, is currently getting into everything, and says 'mama' and 'dada.' That, makes me so happy.

It makes me happy to have a huge cup of coffee in the morning, to smell it brewing and know that THAT is literally liquid energy.

It makes me happy to pick through Granny Smith apples at the grocery store, knowing they'll soon be turned into caramel apples or apple pie (because seriously who eats Granny Smith apples by themselves.... okay, I know ONE person who does).

NBA, NFL, planning a Thanksgiving menu, flannel sheets, less shedding from my animals, cinnamon brooms, clove candles, pumpkin picking, warm vegetable soups, spiced (and spiked) cider. There are so many things to make us happy, I challenge you to write down (or think of) five of your own.

One October Twenty Seventeen

As I sit here contemplating the fragility of life and how to keep my sweet baby girl safe forever, I find myself at a loss for words. I'm sorry. I'm sorry America puts guns before the lives of innocent people trying to enjoy a concert.

This isn't about people who weren't affected. This isn't about the people who "were in Las Vegas last week," or last month, or last year, or who "were going to go to the concert but decided not to." This is about the five minutes of nonstop, merciless bullets falling onto the crowd. This is about the people that lost their lives, their eyes, their loved ones, their limbs.

This isn't about you because you visited Las Vegas ONE TIME and suddenly it "hits closer to home." You aren't scrambling to look for your friend or your loved one, you aren't calling up hospitals checking to see if someone you love or care for is hanging by a thread. You aren't running on one hour of sleep as a first responder.

Your prayers and thoughts aren't distributing snacks and juices to blood alliances to replenish the caloric deficits of those who were able to help. Your prayers aren't transporting victims to the airport to get them home. Your prayers aren't healing the wounded, your prayers aren't bringing back innocently gunned down victims, your prayers aren't stopping the next mass shooting. Your thoughts will do NOTHING, unless you put them into action.

But yet, it isn't time to talk about gun control. Why not? Because we need to grieve first? Isn't America tired of having to grieve?

My best friend put it so eloquently. The world right now is one big dinner party where all of the members are at each other's throats. The host of the dinner party is trying to smile through the madness, trying to come to grips with his or her guests destroying what love is left; soon, only to snap. The metaphor is profound, what will the host do? Our world right now is filled with clamor and disruption. What can you do? Spread love. Volunteer. Donate. Educate. Listen, please listen. Don't just wait to respond. LISTEN.

You're Making Me Blush

I see a lot of posts highlighting the fact that all moms are covered in poop 24/7, spit up, that we essentially just let ourselves go, etc. Au contraire. We still like to drop it like it's hot, get dressed up, cook a bomb ass dinner, workout and shave our legs every now and then.

On the days that that doesn't happen and the child(ren) is/are actin' a fool, pulling cords, crying when you walk out of sight and overall just being a wreck - I've found it's just easiest to slap on THESE products (my faves) so that you aren't alarmed every time you walk by a mirror. By the way, regardless of whether or not you put ANYTHING on your face, you are a rockin' and gorgeous goddess. Take no shit.

But just in case you feelin' yourself and want to be a little extra fancy-fabulous, try these out.

*None of these products are purchased through a distributor or through some crazy online forum, they can all be purchased at Ulta (or MAC).

1. Neutrogena Extra Gentle Eye Makeup Remover Pads - For whatever reason (I guess it's because I didn't fully wash my face off the night before because I was exhausted) my eyes have black underneath them in the mornings. Wipe that shit off with these.

2. Dermalogica Super Rich Repair Age Smart - LOVE LOVE LOVE this, (supposedly) stimulates collagen production and is a wonderful moisturizer. Super small pump, this mess is expensive but you totally get what you pay for.

3. Your Skin But Better CC+ with SPF - Okay, this is legit the end all be all and I love using it in place of regular MAC liquid foundation. This comes in sparkly or matte, I've used both, both are lovely.

4. Warm Soul Mineralize Blush by MAC - This is it. 1-2 sweeps on the cheeks and boom. You look bright-eyed and bushy tailed.

5. They're Real by Benefit - This is by far the best mascara I've ever used. If you don't have time/funds for sexy lash extensions then do yourself a favor and try this!

Stroller Workout

This morning started with a gigantic mug of fall blend coffee and a cardamom and ginger candle burning bright. Even though it's still a crispy 81 degrees in Las Vegas that isn't stopping me from waking up every morning and hoping it's in the 60s before I actually step outside.

I get it DAILY. Messages on Snapchat or comments on Instagram saying "we should workout together!" or "hey can you build me a workout?" "Please move to (random city) and train me!" The truth is, I would love to workout with everyone and go to any city and lead bootcamps like back in the day, but I can't 🤷🏼‍♀️. I teach cycle three days a week and work my ass off to lift heavy at home the other 3 days (I usually aim for 1 rest day a week). Is it easy trying to accomplish all of this with an infant? Hell no! Some days she watches me, other days I workout while she naps.

Today will be a different workout once my little lady wakes up, do it with me! I know you have a stroller, I know you have legs, let's use them today. Here's a stroller workout for you that you'll thank me for tomorrow.

Raise your hand if you like to write things on your to-do list after they're already finished just to feel more accomplished? 🙋🏼 I love fancy to-do lists, filled with pretty colors and lots of places to add random notes and doodles, I especially love doing this while drinking coffee in the living room in the morning while Isla is hanging with me.

I've found that my days are more successful when I write down what I want to accomplish and what I need to accomplish, couple that with a positive affirmation and I'm set. Here's a pretty printable I created to help you get your day going. Try it for a week and tell me you aren't getting more done throughout the day!
